Collection: Merchant and Mills Handsewing Supplies

Carolyn Denham and Roderick Field launched Merchant and Mills in a former toy factory in East Sussex, England. Starting completely from scratch, they built and scoured. materials and tools that they knew people like themselves (a fashion designer and photographer) would need to make and create in the tradition of craft. Business success required expansion in both space and offerings and two years later they reopened with a studio, an upstairs sewing school, a mezzanine, and a ground floor filled with all the wonderful things needed for sewing and making with a conscious and sustainable ethos.

Considering that everything produced, processed, and consumed has an impact on the earth, whether it be sustainable, organic, or not, we as makers have more choices than most. We choose color, shape, style, and fit so we can remake our favorite styles again and again knowing that we will not wear these for just a season but year on year; less is more. This is the essence of sustainable clothing and making.

Within the ethos that is Merchant and Mills, there is a deep respect for the roots of sewing, from trade to home dressmaking, and they hope that they may through their excellent tools and wares, enable and inspire more people to find the satisfaction of simply making.

Merchant and Mills products are stocked in the world's most respected outlets, and the company has successfully collaborated with London's V & A Museum and the fashion house Alexander McQueen.
