Handmade pins by the photographer and graphic designer Julia Gorton.
Julia Gorton started her career as the photographer, designer, and publisher of the no wave fanzine, Beat It!, which offered an insider's view of the downtown New York music scene between 1976 to 1980. Her high-contrast photos combined with graphic patterns, DIY lettering, and hand-collaged elements captured a fleeting time in NYC and music history. She continues working in this unique style today, exploring beyond that era to the present through her work with collage, t-shirts, zines, and portrait photography.
Gorton's photos of musicians and friends have been featured in NY Rocker, the New York Times, Garage, Dazed, and I-D. She's also designed record jackets for independent labels, including Ork Records, Lust/Unlust, and Ze Records. Her work has been included in Untypical Girls by Sam Knee, Who Shot Rock and Roll: A Photographic History 1955-Present by Gail Buckland, and was featured in No Wave: Post-Punk Underground, New York 1976-1980 by Thurston Moore and Byron Coley.
Her photos have been exhibited in Tokyo at Kata Gallery, Doomed Gallery in London, the 309 Punk Project in Pensacola, FL, and in NYC at MOMA, the ICP, the Museum of the City of New York, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Art and Design.
